Holistic Education

सह शिक्षण saha śikṣaṇ – Collaborative Learning

Among all aspects of our daily lives, holistic education is what we take most seriously: creative exploratory learning in the pursuit of truth.

For life to be based on a foundation of truth, we consider holistic education to be that which not only enables the linking of all aspects of life (sustainability, holistic wellness, yoga, meditation, math, science, social-science, history, philosophy, music, arts, writing, communication etc), but also most importantly the means towards grasping a deeper understanding of all its reality.

The current education system in India, (introduced by the British in the mid-1830s) gave rise to a society built upon pyramid-based hierarchies, competition and linear step-ladders to success towards a particular specialized career or occupation.

In rural India most often the path to success leads away from the villages and into bigger opportunities elsewhere, leaving the village populations behind in the larger bottom portion of the pyramid. In the society this system created, a smaller, wealthier ruling class presides over the majority of the obedient, often underprivileged population. In this system, each individual competes with one another to make steps ahead towards the top of the pyramid, which is just not built to have room for everyone.

Furthermore in the society this system created, the resources in our natural environment are ours for the taking, seemingly infinitely available with little or no thought of self-sustainability on the local level. And thus the society this system created is ridden with conflict and destruction to both the environment as much as it to humanity.

Why SNC? Dominant Culture’s need for Change…

learn more why we do what we do at SNC

Time is overdue for a change in the way we live in relationship with both the natural environment as well as each other. SNC’s Holistic Education Philosophy can bring about this change.

Implementing our Holistic Education Philosophy and Curriculum in other schools will contribute to the evolution of humans towards a more peaceful collaborative society and help protect the future sustainability of the remaining resources we can use towards our livelihood on a local level.

We envision the birth of a new holistic society…

one where collaboration replaces competition, where mutual support replaces conflict, and over all, individuals are able to acknowledge the innate interconnectedness between us all, to truly feel we are each part of the collective whole.

We envision this new society to be one where individuals feel inspired to explore beyond just one particular career path or specialized skill set. Adopting an overall holistic approach to collaborative living and co-learning across a broad spectrum of life-skill-departments, enables folks to not only collectively manage a harmonious household, but also a community, a society, a world, outside of the traditional pyramid-based hierarchy structure.

Holistic Education in support of our mission of evolving a new society…

Through fostering future generations of mindful and creative individuals able to live harmoniously and self-sustain-ably in collectives as well as with nature, we believe a new education system needs to replace what has led us to the state of the world in which we are today.

To assess this issue we work within the ground level of the pyramid, re-organizing the communities in our surrounding villages, introducing and initiating by our own example, as we develop an alternative circular interconnected structure to collaborative living and co-learning.

Through our research and experiments currently in progress at Space for Nurturing Creativity, we are creating a new alternative Holistic Education Curriculum, as a model to be adapted, adopted and ultimately replicated both locally as well as globally.

In order to share our Holistic Education Philosophy, we have been creating three separate curriculums:

  • primary school curriculum for children aged 5-13
  • middle-high school curriculum for children aged 14-18
  • life & college preparation curriculum for youth & young adults
